Ok to apply new concrete surface on top of old painted concrete surface?

I have a concrete porch with an old, ugly, scratched up painted surface.

I would like to resurface with new concrete and then acid stain.

Will new concrete stick well to the painted concrete? Would I need a bonding adhesive first? Or perhaps some concrete resurfacer?

I prefer a new purer concrete surface for the acid stain. The old surface is just discolored/painted and would be a ton of work to make it look new.

Thank you.Ok to apply new concrete surface on top of old painted concrete surface?
New concrete won't bond to old concrete no matter what you do, that's why starter rods would be helpful (sort of like the concrete nails idea) You could just drill some holes in the concrete and glue bolts (like liquid nails or max bond) into the holes leaving the bolts sticking out like starter rods, depending on how thick your intended slab would be is how far they would be protruding out, make sure to leave any rod to sit at least 1 1/2'; below the surface of the new concrete.

If you intend you lay a slab thick enough for starters, if not just tile over the old concrete, scrap of most of the paint off as you can and use a rubber type setting compound.

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;If bonding concrete really worked, why do people use expansion joint, you'd think they would just bond the concrete together and be done with it, BTW which you'll need to place around the boundries of the slab that's against any masonry%26lt;%26lt;Ok to apply new concrete surface on top of old painted concrete surface?
There are 2 types of concrete overlays, bonded and un-bonded.

A bonded overlay is when you apply a bonding agent to the existing slab and pour on top of that. This allows the two slabs to move in unison, and makes the topping slab more resistant to impact damage and spalling.

An un-bonded overlay is when a bond breaking agent (or layer of thin plastic) is applied in the same way. The benefits of this technique are that cracks in the bottom slab don't transmit directly into the new slab and it can move independently (like a ';floating'; floor system).

Whichever method is used, it must be consistent. Any part that bonds or fails to bond will cause the slab to crack or break.

I recommend that either be performed by a licensed contractor with overlay experience. This could be fairly easy to mess up without experience.

It might take more time to clean your existing slab to an acceptable level, but you are much more likely to have better results in the long run. And just imagine the cost of clean up and redoing it all over again.
the problem is, new concrete will not adhere to old concrete and eventually it will start to crack and fall apart and then it will look worse than before. how long this will take i dont know maybe only one season. the problem is the new concrete will not expand and contract in unison with the old concrete, again, causing it to crack. the only sure fire way to do this is to replace the entire porch with a new slab of concrete.
Hi,

You need to remove the old coatings %26amp; to help you should use a liquid bonding agent that gets applied to the old concrete. You didn't mention the thickness of the new application but 2 separate pours are never as strong as 1.
Not over smooth concrete.

The old should be Roughed up.

I would even consider driving a lot of concrete nails partially into the old, so that the new will stick.

A supplier may have a better way.

Don't just pour over the old.

It will flake off.
You need to call the concrete supplier and see if they have concrete with the correct plasticizers in it. The old surface should be roughed up with floor grinder. Don't go too thin as it will just crack.
The best thing to do is get the old concrete striped and ground smooth again. Your other option is to break up the old slab. You can't pore new concrete over old.

I have a concrete bird bath and it needs repainting, what particular paint is recommended?

I painted my bird bath with Patio Paints from Michael's Craft stores. You can use it on concrete, it is safe for the birdies, comes in almost any color you want and it is pretty cheap. I highly recommend using the sealer that they also sell because of the water application. I painted my five years ago and it is still looking good.I have a concrete bird bath and it needs repainting, what particular paint is recommended?
Be sure to use an outdoor paint that is SAFE for birds.

Hello, how do i effectively clean up emulsion paint spilt on a concrete floor.?

i agree with the paint thinner.

but the acid is also good but only recommend u using it if u know what your doing. hydrochloric acid is very strong and should be diluted.

acid may also discolor the concrete.

could also use a pressure washer (1500 psi)Hello, how do i effectively clean up emulsion paint spilt on a concrete floor.?
Try paint thinner or maybe some form of acid that will eat at the paint. Paint is very hard to get out of anything... so it's going to take something to eat at it to get it to go away.

  • Why is concrete setting different to paint drying?

takes longer cos of consistanceyWhy is concrete setting different to paint drying?
jonahg3 - is correct. Concrete setting involves hydration, a chemical change. Paint just looses it's bonding solution (usually alcohol or water based) to the atmosphere.

The main reason why paint smells so much.....:)Why is concrete setting different to paint drying?
Concrete setting involves a chemical reaction. Paint drying does not. When paint dries, the solvent that was dissolving or carrying the pigments evaporates.

When concrete sets, the lime reacts with the sand the the other ingredients to form a complex lattice of calcium silicate crystals.
    two totally different chemical reactions.

    www.howstuffworks.com
Concrete is different than paint when it cures due to the fact that there is a chemical bond at the molecular level that releases heat as part of the curing process. The curing process can take a long period of time with concrete.

Paint releases alcohol, or alcohol type chemicals that dis purse into the surrounding air and dry the paint in a very short period of time.
concrete setting is a chemical reaction between the water and the cement which is called hydration which gives off heat which gives concrete that warm to touch feel just before it hardens.

paint drying is not a chemical reation and does not require water to be added to assist setting or drying
Concrete dries by heating up, most paints dry by some form of evaporation.

    CONCRETE ? , I want to either paint or stain a 3' x 12' slab.?

How do I prep it? Which works best? It is part of a covered patio, so there won't be too much direct exposure to the elements. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks!CONCRETE ? , I want to either paint or stain a 3' x 12' slab.?
I vote for staining it. First of all, the look is much nicer----concrete staining is very popular for a reason, and there are lots of great colors. Secondly, the stain will never flake like concrete paint does. With paint, once moisture gets under it, all the work is for naught. To stain concrete, first clean it with a pressure washer. Then you have to etch it if the concrete is really smooth or really old. Then you apply the stain with a garden sprayer. It's a very easy DIY job that requires little maintenance other than sealing it every year or two, which you should be doing with concrete anyhow..CONCRETE ? , I want to either paint or stain a 3' x 12' slab.?
obviously you need to clean it first.. but how you clean it is important.. if there are stains or some mold or moss, something of that nature.. you want to get yourself a bottle of muriatic acid.. lowes and walmart or home depot should have it.. mix it with water and scrub the concrete first.. it will eliminate all the things I mentioned and more.. follow the directions.. that stuff is hot.. so don't make ti so strong that it will etch the concrete.. the directions are on the bottle.. clean it then coat it with masonry primer.. and then paint it with a good masonry paint.. sherwin williams makes the best.. good luck
    clean it , with a hose , even a power hose ,

leave it over night , then brush it clean , is the slab is really rought , paint a concrete primer on it , if not ,go to walmart / sher williams one gallon will work, with a roller . paint in the early evening ,much cooler , and less people to stand on it

first step clean the surface as well as u can with hose and soap or floor cleaner, let dry for couple of days depending on weather, apply prime let dry, then apply floor paint to surface. They actually make paint made for flooring. If that's to expensive i have tried some enamel paint and it has held up very well.
You need a good epoxy paint to resist wear and hot-tire pickup.

    it will work ok.

How do I resurface a concrete balcony. After that I want to paint it.?

Clean surface and remove all excess oil.

Use an engine cleaner to remove oil.

Thereafter use a sodium based general purpose cleaner to remove all other dirt.

To resurface a previously concrete surfaced area, the surface has to be chipped ie using a chisel knock some pock holes into to surface to aid the new concrete to grip onto the old surface.

Therafter, a bonding agent, usually a water based emulsion solution such as a clear paint could be used to coat the surface. This is optional.

Thereafter, use a slush ie a diluted mixture of cement and sand and water and brush it onto the old surface.

This acts as a teaser before the proper and final skreed is applied to the surface and aids gripping of final skreed.

Once a 20mm skreed is applied, there are many options to paint the surface.

Use an alkaline resistant, resin based paint to coat surface. 3 coats, 1st coat diluted with turps, thereafter a full coat straight from the tin, repeat, once more if desired.

The more expensive option is to use an epoxy based, 2 pack coating system for waterproofing purposes.

Also a slightly cheaper version would be a polyurethane based coating system.

I would go for the cheaper alkaline based version containing an iron oxide colour. After a few years, repaint it.How do I resurface a concrete balcony. After that I want to paint it.?
First Clean the surface then use a concrete etcher to etch the balcony. Then I would use a Exterior paint, due to the fact that stains have to be reapplied more then paint and generally last longer. There is a great article in the June issue of consumer reports on why to use a paint over a stain. I would recommend using KILZ exterior you can get it at Wal-mart. The article also reviews this paint. How do I resurface a concrete balcony. After that I want to paint it.?
    just have guts.
Don't use paint on your concrete, use a concrete stain

What is the best way to clean an indoor painted concrete floor?

I have painted concrete as well. I'm not sure if it is the best way, but what I do is spray it with windex, and use a rag and scrub it with my foot.

Mops don't seem to hold up well on them, and it seems like you have to scrub a little harder than you do on say linoleum, which is why I use my feet. This is the best way that I have figured out, plus by the time I am all done, it is a great work-out. =)

  • Can you tile over a painted concrete surface?

I plan to tile my outdoor balcony. It currently has chipping paint over a concrete surface. I have heard conflicting information on whether the paint needs to be stripped or not. I would rather not (of course) but am willing to do if its necessary. Please advise!! Thank you!Can you tile over a painted concrete surface?
You can do it without stripping the paint, just consider the material you use and have a professional do it. That will add lots of value for you. I would scrape the loose paint first though. Can you tile over a painted concrete surface?
depends on how bad it is chipping.

try power washing first to see what breaks lose.

make sure the thin-set (mortar) you use is made for outdoor use.

it will bond to the painted concrete but we are talking about the longevity of the install.
As long as it is etched or a rough surface , it will be fine. Just make sure all paint chips are not loose.

Lowes will guide you in the right direction on what materials are needed.

Me? I would use a sand blaster to clean the paint, hose down, dry, paint a sealer over the concrete like an epoxy to make the tiles adhere better.

Hope you live in a warm place all year around, the mortar in the tiles seem to be weakend over time during freezing %26amp; thawing seasons, then you really have a problem. Problems with water and dirt in cracks causes the tiles to get loose and fall off. Good luck!
you will have to use hydraulic concrete to level the floor than you can put tile over it.
Chip off the loose paint and if the paint is shiny at all, you will have to sand it to a rough finish. Go to Lowes and buy a product called Mega Bond along with the latex additive. The Mega bond is used for outdoor use. You will need this for the expansion and contraction during cold and hot weather. Mega bond is the thinset you will need to set the tiles. Make sure you use tiles that are made from Porcelian or natural stone, don't use Ceramic. Hope this helps.
Are you talking about vinyl or ceramic tile? The adhesion to the concrete is what is important, if the paint is coming off it will not hold the tile down because the glue will stick to the paint. If most of the paint is staying put you can just clean off the flaky areas and stick down your tile. Have fun

depends what you are painting and why... a mural will need a primer...

If you go to home depot paint section there is paint that is better for concrete...

Kilz is good for say...basements...it repels mold. Outdoors, you might want to use an oil based primer.
    Hire it done

If nothing else has worked, you can actually remove just a bit of the concrete with a wire brush, or wire wheel.

This shouldn't hurt the finish and is cheaper and safer than sandblasting.
you can buy a product called graffiti remover at a hardware store
You can try some paint thinner, or some plain gasoline. Let it soak there a couple of minutes, then I've used a pressure washer....and never had a problem with getting it off. Best of luck to you.

Should I sand blast paint off of a concrete deck.?

I have tried scraping it with ';Jasco'; and a razor scraper and it just seems to be taking too long. Should I sand blast? How does one work.Should I sand blast paint off of a concrete deck.?
Go with a power washer. You can rent them by the hour. If you sand blast you must be very very careful as this will pit the concrete.Should I sand blast paint off of a concrete deck.?
Sand blasting will work wonders and it's not hard work. You can usually rent the machine. It works by pressure, similar to a pressure washer, except that instead of water it uses a special type and grain of sand that will clean things such as concrete, brick, metal, wood and will also etch glass. It can also be used indoors.
Sandblasting will work but be sure to follow directions and warnings closely. Wear a mask, gloves, long sleeves and don't let any part of you get in the way. Be sure you use a sand that is designed for sandblasting or the nozzle will clog with even the tiniest pebble...i.e. use Silica Sand or a purified sand and screen out any tiny pebbles. Test it on some obsure part of the deck to see results...once you are used to it it works great but you can easily pit the surface if you get too close with the nozzle.
i wouldnt sand blast it, use a pressure washer...
you could but try this rent a power washer from depot 2400 psi or the paint store water can clean concrete back to white or go and rent a blaster for sand use protective goggles and masks amd gloves and long sleeves
Use a power washer and then when dry, paint it.

Sand blasting could result in painting your house too:)

  • How do i paint a concrete floor so that it looks like tile?

Paint the basecoat on first usually a grey color to simulate the mortar joints, I used 1/2 inch painters tape to tape off 12 inch square tiles, then chose a red brick color for the tile squares. Use good concrete paint, allow plenty of dry time between the grey color and the color choice for the tile. Apply a good poly sealer in several coats. I used this process to do a 12x16 enclosed porch and it worked great, use throw rugs for high traffic areas and it will hold up pretty good. Good quality paint is the key like an epxoy paint, Lowes carries it. Good Luck and be patient when doing this it takes some time but end results are good. How do i paint a concrete floor so that it looks like tile?
use a chalk line mark out your tiles then apply paintHow do i paint a concrete floor so that it looks like tile?
All good suggestions BUT, before applying anything to the floor test for Hydrostatic Vapor. (tests available at finer flooring stores. Commonly referred toas a Calcium Chloride test). If you have more than 3 lbs of vapor pressure, your paint will eventually bubble. If less than 3, etch the concrete to open pours for paint to bond to.
First use paint for concrete or concrete stain, clean the area well and let dry thoroughly.Paint a base coat in the color you want the grout lines to be.Let dry thoroughly.Use thin painters tape to mark out your tile lines.Paint over with the color you want your bricks to be.Use a sea sponge for texture.Mine looked really good.Everyone thought it was real brick from a distance.
1/4 inch painters tape, laid straight, at a size you choose lay the cross lines, then roll the finish. You could add some texture or even faux finish after.

Certainly you should use a quality concrete paint, but still should clear coat it fo abrasions that will naturally happen

I've done this many times with moderate to good success.

    Rev. Steven
Why paint it when you can have it polished and it will look like a stone floor.
I read this technique in a magazine and plan to do the front porch using it.

    1. Paint your base coat, which will be the color of the ';grout';. Use several coats to give project a good base.

    2. Using sturdy cardboard (they used a pizza box) cut to the size of tile you want to simulate.

    3. Cover cardboard w/foam to creat a ';stamp';.

    4. Select three complimentary colors and place ';stamp'; in one, then swirl the other two across the face of the ';stamp';.

    5. ';Stamp'; your floor. Begin using a center point and work out from there. The small variations in color and placement will give the flooring a very authentic look.

    6. Let dry and apply a clear finish.

    Good Luck!

What paint should I use to retard mold growth on my unsealed 35 yr old concrete basement floor?

Ohhh, I just had this problem earlier this summer, and I cried. After trying several solutions, I finally had a recommendation to use Endur-O-Seal, to seal the concrete. It also kills the mold. You have to kill the mold first. When the mold has no more oxygen that can hit it or effect it, it dies. That is most important. Home Depot carries a good line of products too, and they also carry a product that you can use to paint the surface, but seal it first, even if the product says that it seals and paints. Since concrete is porus, you need to get deep inside and seal all this off.

You may also want to stain the concrete, for a more natural look. I had bad mold in my crawl space, an area that was too complicated for me to fix on my own, and I had a professional service come out and kill the mold and spray a sealent. Honestly, it was worth the money - and if I sell my home, I know that it is being sold in its best possible shape. What paint should I use to retard mold growth on my unsealed 35 yr old concrete basement floor?

What kind of stain & sealer do you use on a concrete fountain? I am not getting any info from paint stores.?

They have them were you can get the stain color tinted to whatever color you want. What kind of stain %26amp; sealer do you use on a concrete fountain? I am not getting any info from paint stores.?
Sikken's makes a great sealer line. They are oil based, so there will be a slight tint to it. It is not perfectly clear.

If you are painting the foundation, try Grip and Seal, by Coronado. It's the best I have ever used, but it is white.

Good luck. What kind of stain %26amp; sealer do you use on a concrete fountain? I am not getting any info from paint stores.?
Ok, I used to work at Home Depot, so I'll save you taking a trip and asking all of the questions. Dry-lock is a sealer and paint in one. Contractors prefer this because it's a one step process, but not always the most effective. Thompson's waterseal is also a sealer and paint in one (a little better quality), but same deal as dry-lock. I will reccommend Behr's conrete waterproofer because it not only seals the outer edge of the concrete, but also penetrates through and seals further into the concrete. Then apply a primer/paint over this application once it's dry. Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.
You will want to begin by cleaning the concrete with an etching cleaner to remove contaminates and leaching lime. Muratic acid is widely used in this application, however, it is based on sulfuric acid which is dangerous to you and the environment. Top Secret Coatings has an excellent etching cleaner, TS 695 Etching Cleaner (as seen the supplies page of the company website). It is actually fertilizer in the flowerbeds. It accomplishes the same thing as muratic acid without the danger. Once thoroughly dry you are ready to prime. If you are looking for a waterproof primer that works as a waterproof barrier coat I suggest Top Secret's TS 6390/92 ever-Last Epoxy Primer. It is a polyamide two component epoxy primer that can be brushed, rolled or sprayed. Adhesion, durability and value are excellent. This is the same stuff the Army, navy and Coast Guard uses so it's the good stuff. Another option would be their TS-307 Oil Based Primer. It is easier to use because it is a single component product but it hasn't the pedigree of the Ever-Last Primer. I suggest staying away from water-based primer because water is not a vehicle into masonry, solvents are so adhesion is far better. I hope this info helps. Good luck with the project.
I have 4 concrete fountains and have tried just about every concrete paint, stain and sealer out there and have been frustrated with the peeling, flaking and fading that occurs with most of the brands. Plus, it is difficult to get many of them in the colors I wanted (one is bronze, one is black patina with green accents, for example).

I found using the Behr sealer first lasts longer than the drylock and performs better with the constant presence of water and the splash factor. Thompsons water seal was absolutely the worst and a total waste of time within short order. Then, to get the colors I want I head for the craft store and use Patio Paints for concrete which come in a ton of colors. After painting the fountain, I use the Patio Paint sealer. I'm on two years since I painted them and this technique has lasted longer than anything else I've tried.
    use a waterproofer

They sell paint that is available especially for concrete. They use it on concrete garage floors etc. to seal them and make them look pretty. They have something for concrete driveways and for outdoor patios, too. Get to a Home Depot or Lowes or Sears type store, Ace Hardware and Large Auto Stores like PepBoys also carry that paint. Check it out, it is good and works well. Good Luck, try their websites first to save gas and price shop..

Will a ';diamond'; grinding cup wheel strip paint from concrete?

Can you use a ';diamond'; cup grinding wheel to strip paint from concrete? Will it do the job? I have a 4'; portable grinder. Will a ';diamond'; grinding cup wheel strip paint from concrete?
It will, but you have to be careful when you do it. It's easy for it to get away a little and gouge the wall. Take your time, and wear a mask and glasses. Hope this helps. Will a ';diamond'; grinding cup wheel strip paint from concrete?
Yes, it will strip paint easily, however, that is an expensive way to strip paint. The diamond cup wheel is for milling the concrete down, and I consider it overkill for stripping paint. They make a backer pad and course, medium and fine abrasive scratch pads that can be used on a high-speed 4 1/2 inch angle grinder. I use the fine pad mostly to remove paint from concrete without removing significant concrete with the paint. It comes off real fast (one pass) even with the fine pad. If you are in a hurry, use the course. I bought mine at Lowe's Home Improvement center.
It will work but the dust will be awful. Make sure you put dust walls at openings to your house the dust will cover everything. You could hook up a vacuum system at the grinder.Or look on line they have an attachment that mounts on the grinder and it does work. We bought 2 of them and there was 0% dust put out. Or you also look on line there is a product that is called peel away It is Eco. Friendly. We have used this product on our job site. Because the paint we were taking off had lead in it. Make sure that the paint does not have lead in it. They have this product at lowes that you can test the paint for lead. Good luck.

I want to paint my basement wall , they are concrete, any ideas , we are making it into a family room?

try buying some home interior/design magazines or borrowing some books from your library so you can have an idea of what kind of color combination you might like.

try painting one wall a different color from the rest of the three other walls. for example, a deep chocolate brown on one wall and light mocha brown on the rest.

it also depends if you get any sunlight in your basement at all. maybe a lighter color combination would be better to lighten up your basement?

how about lime or celadon green with with trim?I want to paint my basement wall , they are concrete, any ideas , we are making it into a family room?
Get paneling. They sell it at Lowe`s and it is inexpensive and will give the room a much nicer appearance.I want to paint my basement wall , they are concrete, any ideas , we are making it into a family room?
Wow, you can have lot's of fun with that. First, though, you need an excellent primer. Sherwin and Williams have some great products. I would do two coats just to make sure.

Next, you can just use latex paint and be done. Or get creative and get some drywall mud and trowel a pattern. You can put sand in the mud and do an old fashioned skip trowel design like you would see in some of the older homes. Look at wall finishes that are hand done in other homes or some of the hipper dept. stores. Good Luck!!

What kind of paint do i use on concrete?

have a round stepping stone and im doing a craft project. what kind of craft paint can i use to paint on this???What kind of paint do i use on concrete?
I just got through painting a birdbath made out of concrete so I will tell you what I did and seems to be holding up quite well. First I used an acrylic paint that has a soap and water clean up component. Then I went to the Home Depot Store and bought Krylon spray on base for concrete items. I bought the high gloss medium and seems to be doing quite well with the water in it all the time. I sprayed the inside of the bowl 4 times to make sure it got thoroughly coated. The outside and stem of the bath only got two coats. Hope it works for you seems to be alright for me!What kind of paint do i use on concrete?
Almost any sort of moderate-quality water-based paint will stick to concrete if it is not to be used outdoors. If this is a permanent outdoor application, and as a walking surface that will actually be used, you should use an exterior-grade paint or stain designed specifically for concrete. Good paint of this nature isn't cheap, and cheap paint isn't good. The very good paints are probably serious overkill in your case.

Note that the concrete should be clean, dry and dust-free.

If you are going to tile, you need do nothing, assuming you mean ceramic or porcelean tile put down with thin-set mortar.

If you are thinking painting, paint does indeed tend not to stick very well to poly. It would be a big job, but surface sanding just to get the gloss off anything would very much help the paint to adhere.I would like to paint or tile a concrete floor now coated with polyurethane. Concrete wall in house has a lot of moisture paint keeps bubbling help?

just purched a house one of the rooms has what seems to be a partial concrete wall i think it was onece a chimeny that has been coverd it has alot of moisture which is causeing the paint to buble off and is turning the surounding walls yellow what do i do???Concrete wall in house has a lot of moisture paint keeps bubbling help?
The bubbling is called efflourescense -- it is caused by a calcium based acid formed when moisture interacts with the plaster or drywall. The acid is also most likely causing a lot of the yellowing problems, but yellowing can also be due to impurities coming in with the water.

You have to eliminate the source of the moisture and allow the wall to fully dry out afterwards, before painting. (2-3 weeks minimum dry out time, after final repairs.) Sometimes in severe cases, you need to demolish the old plaster or drywall to get rid of all the acid (and potential mold issues). But often you can just use a sealer in milder cases.

The moisture could be a roof or gutter leak, or condensation from icing issues. Problem could be your chimney (flashing or masonry) or breech in the roofing material. If it's a gutter leak, it is some sort of overflow problem. You need an established company that does roof and gutter work and is also familiar with masonry issues. Most slate and tile specialty roofing companies have this experience, but if you have shingles on you roof, they might not be interested. So it might take a little homework to find the company. You might actually need two different companies -- masonry company AND roofing/gutter company. Chimneys can sometimes be real devils to fix and get to a point where they no longer allow water to get inside.Concrete wall in house has a lot of moisture paint keeps bubbling help?
Like ian k said, seal it. The good concrete sealers are expensive but spend the money. This way you seal it once and forget about it.
You need to seal the wall fist, with,anti-fungal sealer
You need to find out where the damp is coming from first. It is no good covering it up with foil or painting it over - the structure will only crumble underneath. Get a reliable surveyor to check it out. If it is a chimney breast, it is possible water is leaking through a lead flashing where the chimney stack meets the roofline, or possibly the pointing of the brick work on the outside needs replacing.
go to a trade supplying paint store and by some oil based primer sealer.paint the whole affected area making sure you put a good coating of the sealer on.allow to dry thoroughly then decorate as you choose
An old fashioned remedy is to cover the wall in alluminum foil (cooking foil) before papering and painting!

But these days you can either get a damp specialist in or in diy stores they sell a damp paint that you paint on the wall before decorating.

If its that bad though, get a damp specialist to give a quote first and some advice.
If it was a chimney that is no longer in use then get the top blocked off to stop the rain getting in. However, if the wall has been cemented over recently it may be that it is efforlorescence which is when there is moisture in the wall but it will go in time. You could try a dehumidifier.
for concrete walls, our painter usually use a concrete neutralizer, before applying paints. Let this dry first before applying the first coating of paint or primer paint. Ask your hardware store on what paints are available in your area for concrete walls. Some paints are for wood only.

Keep paint from peeling off on a damp concrete floor?

I use concrete paint but it peels off in several monthe.

    Thanks

Keep paint from peeling off on a damp concrete floor?
Concrete paint only works on DRY concrete. You are trying to paint over wet concrete. You need to bake out the moisture to have any hope. Heating the concrete (warmer than the atmosphere at least) for a period of time will drive out the moisture, and then you paint. However, if water is seeping in from outside, from the foundation being cracked or not being sealed properly, then you are out of luck. As long as water can seep into the concrete, it will soak up moisture like a sponge and the paint will never stick properly.Keep paint from peeling off on a damp concrete floor?
prime it first with a water sealer then repaint. Sometimes it doesn't hold well because of to much moisture under the floor.

If it is drips and it was latex paint hot water and detergent with a scrub brush should do the trick. Or you can saturate it with cooking oil, let it sit for a day to absorb then wash with detergent.

    Staining concrete over paint splatter?

The third floor in my house is about to become a lounge area. We're thinking of staining the concrete floors, but were wondering if we could keep some of the paint splatters or even apply more for a textured, funky look. Has anyone ever done this?

I'm worried that not removing the paint may affect the way the stain settles.Staining concrete over paint splatter?
You have concrete floors on the third floor? Wow talk a about a sturdy house. Any imperfection of the surface of the cement will show through the paint. It will leave a bump that is visible. I just painted the cement floor in my basement and the imperfections in the cement show through but are much less noticeable now.Staining concrete over paint splatter?
The stain will not penetrate the paint and would look terrible. Either remove the paint splatters and stain or just paint the floor and then splatter colors on it.

I found an oil stain on concrete and wondered could i paint the concrete with oil?

Why not just get some kitty litter and put on the oil stain to remove it? Why would you want all that oil on your concrete? Are you a redneck?

How to patch a cracked, concrete, painted porch?

My front concrete porch has a 1/4'; to 1/2'; wide crack all the way across the top, about 4 feet long. Will hydraulic cement be ok to repair this? Can I feather the edges with a wet sponge as to not show the repair? I will be painting over it, so silicone will not work. Any help will be appreciated. How to patch a cracked, concrete, painted porch?
Is the porch level all the way across? Or did the crack appear because one portion dropped?

If this is the case, you may want to consider talking to a concrete repair service, aka 'mudjack' to have the porch repaired. They would pump a cement slurry under the porch, bringing it back up to its original level.

If the crack is along the edge between the porch, and the home foundation, and the porch itself is in decent shape, then I'd be looking at mortar/cement to fill the gap, or the mudjack to bring the porch back up to original placement.

If the crack runs across the porch itself, and the porch is level over the crack, then I would consider filling the gap with an epoxy. The epoxy would be stronger than cement/mortar.

Place a straight edge across the crack and see if the porch slopes/tilts on one side of the crack etc.... This will also give you an idea as to whether it will be possible to 'blend' the repair in. The more level it is across the crack, the easier it will be to blend in the repair.

take a grinder and open the crack up, then fill with a portland cement mix. this way you can keep it flush with the porch top and not have to worry about feathering it...

    Good Luck!

What kind of stain & sealer do you use on a concrete fountain? I am not getting any info from paint stores.?

    Behr basement and masonry sealer

make sure to use the kind that resists hydrostatic pressure

    at home depot

Good luck.

You can buy the graffiti remover at Lowes, Home Depot or one of those stores.

Then you get the kids and SHOW them how to clean it. They remember a lesson much better if they are involved in it. It doesn't make any difference HOW long it takes. Are there any products good at getting a skin of concrete off of tools without taking the paint off too?

muriatic acid only eats cementAre there any products good at getting a skin of concrete off of tools without taking the paint off too?
Sorry to disagree with Crash but Muriatic acid ';eats'; paint fairly well and has little effect on concrete. If it is just a skin of concrete, I'd take it off with a wire brush and re-prime and paint the tool -- taking more care with clean-up the next time I do some concrete work. Are there any products good at getting a skin of concrete off of tools without taking the paint off too?
Soak it in water for several days then take it to a high pressure washer at a car wash

I want to paint my daughters concrete bedroom floor in zebra print can this be done?

zebra stripe wall and floor stencil here

http://teensthemes.com/safari/wild-safar鈥?/a>I want to paint my daughters concrete bedroom floor in zebra print can this be done?
Clean it and prime it. Then white paint all over (an outdoor paint). Then make a stencile of black stripes out of posterboard or anything thick. Spray paint the stencile so the stripes will show on the concrete. Do it all over to give it a zebra effect. Then apply a sealer with a roller effect. Go to your local sherwin williams or smaller family owned store. The big box store sometimes dont always have an experience person on staff.I want to paint my daughters concrete bedroom floor in zebra print can this be done?
Yes. If you are painting directly onto the concrete then use a primer first. To be on the safe side, use out-door paints to avoid deterioration, but air out the room well before having her sleep in there.

    Good luck.
Make sure you clean the floor well then apply a primer then paint as you would like then sealing it should help from pealing and wear. Good luck hope your daughter enjoys
that would suck having a concrete floor screw painting it and seeing cracks everywhere buy her some freaking carpet.
Yes it can be! Sounds cool!
    your daughter is so lucky!

that will be the coolest thing ever!
Yes, your wonderful effort will turn out beautifully! Take care to clean the floor well and to use a very rough sand paper and then a medium and finally a fine sandpaper on a block to smooth down the concrete surface if it has rough little bumps. Clean it very well by vacuuming and then maybe steam cleaning or scrubbing and then vacuuming again to get it really clean.

Mark out what you do not want to paint and use lots of painter tape to carefully outline the edges of where the paint will be. Or go wild and paint away to your heart's desire! It will be nice and orderly if you plan it and get complimentary colors, prepare and clean the floor well, paint as you want it to appear light colors first, then any darker colors after the light color has dried completely. Finally the darkest colors to finish up, and then cover it all with a good clear semi-gloss or satin finish sealer, or a high-gloss sealer if you are planning to keep it clean as a dinner plate, to enjoy all that shine when you are not busy scrubbing and buffing the high gloss finish.

So plan it, then get good supplies and paint like Sherwin-Williams or Dunn Edwards or Behr or Benjamin Moore Paints or Frazee or Griggs or premium house-brand paints at the building supply store or warehouse outlet, and the type of sealer you are going to be satisfied to have. Prep it, paint, ventilate, paint, ventilate, ventilate, then get it sealed and fully cured, and enjoy it.

The computer color matching station at the paint supply or home building supply can match anything exactly, and then give some complementary colors that will look right. Try that and see if you like the color combinations the computer picks to match your main color.

The floor will be cool or cold in the winter so plan to add a big throw rug if bare feet will be walking in that room on winter mornings.

Oh, you can try a closet or the corner of the garage or the garage or a work room of a friend or relative first before you work on the bedroom if you wnat to give this project a trial run, to see what equipment supplies and techniques are needed.

Can I paint over a stained and sealed interior concrete floor?

If you want to paint over a stained and sealed floor u must sand the floor first. Because paint is hard to adhere to glossy surfaces. There is a primmer called Zinser 123 that adheres to any without sanding. Its latex, low order, 400 sq ft per gallon. Dries in 30 minutes. Wait 1hour then paint.

American Tradtion(Valpar Comp.) makes porch %26amp; floor paint. Latex or Oil. Latex is a satin finish. Oil is glossy but it can be slippery. Hundreds of colors to choose from. Available at Lowes.

  • Paint product that made formica look like stone or concrete.?

My wife and I saw a show most likely on HGTV where they used a product that looked like stone or concrete over formica, and covered it with a food safe clear coating. We looked up the show and found the product. When we went to the store the people did not know what we were talking about. Now we cannot remember the name of the show or the name of the product. Does anybody remember it?Paint product that made formica look like stone or concrete.?
I saw the same show and I don't remember what it was either, but I think I found the product PermaGlaze. Here is there site:

http://www.permaglaze.com/cabinetrefinis鈥?/a>Paint product that made formica look like stone or concrete.?
I didn't see the show you are talking about but at Home Hardware they have flexrock and granite. I tried using the granite on my counter and it was so hard to work with and looked like crap. Big waste of time and money and ended up replacing the counter.
My sister used 'Fleckstone' on her countertop and a clearcoat (Permaglaze?) on top. Looked great at first but she said it wasn't nearly as durable as formica. If you're staying, you could take your chances with the 'fleckstone/permaglaze'; if you're selling, you are likely to be better off replacing - 'new counters' are good selling point.

To paint the inside of an exterior wall that is stamped concrete, does outside temp have to be 50 or above?

whats some of the easiest ways to remove paint from concrete blocks

my basement is leaking and i want to get all of the paint off the blocks and then seal up everything whats some of the easiest ways to remove paint from concrete blocks
There is NO easy way to remove paint from cinder blocks. All those nooks and crannies make it really impossible. So really, short of a lot of sand blasting, it ain't gonna happen. Even if you could soften the old paint, you can't scrape it.

Still, a really good sealer will do the job on top of the old paint, since it bonds so well. Try Zinsser Watertite. It's a great product line.

What type of paint roller can I use for lacquer application to concrete floor?

While I cannot imagine at all, applying lacquer to a floor, concrete or otherwise, no offense, it should be applied with medium nap rollers, allowed to FLOW, NOT agitated extremely, and use naps that will not FUZZ/PILL/SHED, and NOT foam. You should also assume to throw away the naps, no matter how much you spend on them.

I would recommend a concrete overlay and or concrete sealer. You can do this yourself but please do plenty of research on products and techniques. Porter paint has concrete overlay materials and concrete sealers that are available to the public. We have used them and been pleased. How can i remove spray paint from concrete in a basement?

There is a product called goof off made just for that problem.Be shure to use good ventilation such as a fan if there are no windows!!!How can i remove spray paint from concrete in a basement?
You can buy products at your favorite home improvement center made especially for taking paint off of concrete.

Or you can make your own with muriatic acid (sold in gallon jugs at pool supply stores) diluted with water. Experiment in an hidden spot until you find the right mixture. I suggest about a pint to one gallon of water to start. If it doesn't work, add more acid, if it makes the concrete bubble, add more water.

Be sure to wear eye protection, rubber gloves and have a ventilation fan going. Spray on the concrete, it will remove the paint, wash off and you will have a newly poured concrete look. How can i remove spray paint from concrete in a basement?

To get rid of cooking grease stain out of concrete can I use paint thinner?

409 Glass and Surface (purple) works on granite to remove cooking grease stain. Here is how it do it: take a paper towel much bigger than the stain, lay the towel over the stain, soak the paper towel with 409 purple, get it full, cover with plastic wrap bigger than the paper towel, tape the perimeter down, leave no part of the plastic wrap un-taped, wait 3 or 4 days until all 409 purple has evaporated and remove the plastic and paper. If the spot isn't totally gone, repeat. To get rid of cooking grease stain out of concrete can I use paint thinner?
I like working smart not hard and I've dealt with concrete spills consisting of peanut oil , transmission fluid to motor oil. The only thing I do it to sprinkle a little dry concrete mix, no more than a 1/4'; thick and no larger than the grease spot itself. After about a day, sweep up the concrete mix and discard. Concrete mix can be purchased at any hardware or home center and costs about $5.00 for enough to absorb grease spills for 2 years.
Easier, and less smelly, to use powdered laundry detergent. Pour onto the stain and then moisten. Let sit and hour or so and then scrub.

Remove old paint from concrete floor?

Any ideas on the best way to remove old ';stubborn'; paint from a concrete basement floor foundation. This stuff has been on there so long even a heat gun is almost useless.

Thanks for your helpRemove old paint from concrete floor?
sand blasting is the only sure and complete answerRemove old paint from concrete floor?
    here my recipe for disaster

linseed oil on rags and a wire brush
Sandblasting is one of the best ways to remove this. Although it will leave some mess though.
Soak it in meths for a couple of hours then get the heat gun back on it.
Of the answers I read below, I'd say I agree with the sander best. If your basement is enclosed, power washing can create more problems than it solves. So will sandblasting. They are the most effective to do the job, but the cleanup is very labor-intensive. I have never been a fan of using heat to remove paint, and I certainly would clear away from using a solvent and heat. If it doesn't create toxic fumes or catch fire, it will most certainly leave a gooey mess. Although I think a nice big power sander is the best option, I would ask you what is your future plan for the floor? Are you going to re-paint? If not, why not just put down a water-barrier film, and cover with flooring or carpet, and forget the paint underneath altogether.
Pressure Washer is the ticket - oh and a wet dry vac - done this in several ';finished'; basements but be careful - go slow - lots of pressure not so much flow
try a hand held belt sander.

I'd like to lay tile on my concrete porch, but it has layers of paint on it. How do I prep the surface?

It's my front porch which measures 38 x 8 ft It has a roof , but isn't enclosed.I'd like to lay tile on my concrete porch, but it has layers of paint on it. How do I prep the surface?
Here's the complete answer for you.

First of all, the old paint MUST be removed. The very best method is pressure washing it with a minimum of 2600psi water pressure. You can rent one if you don't have one. Do not purchase a piece of crap electric one, because it will not do the job. Remember, at least 2600psi.

Secondly, allow the slab to dry completely. After the slab is dry, take a tablespoon of water and gently apply it to the surface of the concrete. If the water soaks in right away, test the concrete again in 2 other places a few feet from where you did the first test. If the water soaks in all three places, then you are ready to tile. If the water beads up and takes a long time to soak in, then you MUST acid etch. If you determine you do not need to etch, go to step 4.

Third, purchase muriatic acid at any local paint store. Also purchase a respirator. Ask a sales person at the paint retailer to help you with the proper respirator. Do not use pool acid or any other acid! Follow the directions on the package for mixing. Usually it is 4 parts water to one part acid. You simply need to open the pores of the concrete. After you etch, rinse the acid off with that same pressure washer. Make sure you really delute the acid as you wash it off. Allow the concrete to dry 12-24 hours, depending on the weather.

Fourth, apply thin-set mortar and tile. Remember to apply the thin-set with a square notched trowel, the same thickness as the tile you are setting. I also recommend using a thin-set with an acrylic additive already mixed in for added adhesion, especially if you use that patio a lot.

Well, there you have it. I've been in both the paint and the tile business. It sounds like a lot of hassle, but if you want to enjoy that tile for a long time without having to worry about a tile popping up every so often, it's worth it to do it right the first time.

Good luck!I'd like to lay tile on my concrete porch, but it has layers of paint on it. How do I prep the surface?
    Acid wash with muriatic acid.
    Just sweep it real good..
I have done this before and in order to really do a good job, though not absolutely necessary, is to apply acid(muriatic acid) to the concrete.. let stand a while and then scrape off. Following this, let dry a day and then start your tiling
One thing about laying tile on a porch is that you have to remember how slippery it can get when wet and being outside that can be dangerous. Consider a rougher tile or stone that may be less slippery in an outdoor environment (a rougher surface might look better too, having a more natural outdoorsy look). You dont want anyone to get hurt.
strip the old paint,, to good concrete to apply the grout base too
Hey, I'd like to do the same on my back patio. Let me know when you find out. I searched the web but only found info on how to paint concrete. I assume you have a concrete porch. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.
Score the paint, etch the concrete with muriatic acid, clean with trisodium phosphate then lay the tile.

What product and procedure do I use to paint new garage concrete floor?

Please ask for a concrete floor paint suitable for indoor/outdoor application, available in most paints stores. You may wish to add a bit of anti skid powder. Good Luck! What product and procedure do I use to paint new garage concrete floor?
Lowes sells a great product called EPOXY SEAL in gallons in the paint department.

First you prep the surface. Some people use muriatic acid, which ';etched'; the concrete to accept product.

I don't like using this, but the same makers of epoxy seal make a product called CONCRETE ETCH that is citrus based and very pleasant to work with.

The Epoxy seal product is so durable that it can even handle brake fluid being spilt on it as long as it is wiped up before 20 minutes.

Most concrete epoxies (rustoleum, valspar) can't handle this. It will immediately compromise the floor coating.

It also does not have NEAR the hot tread pick-up from car tires that the other products do or paint or concrete stain for that matter.

It is a wonderful product, it has over 20 custom colors and has a very good product guarantee. You simply roll it on with an extension handle and roller designed for epoxy based products (also easily located in paint section).

It only took me one coat.

I found using it was easy and the results wonderful.

    Good luck.

P.S. Most ';anti-skid'; powder is sand. I did not add this to my product and have had no trouble with slipping. What product and procedure do I use to paint new garage concrete floor?
I suggest an epoxy coating, either one that is a singular color http://www.musclegloss.com/why_muscleglo鈥?/a> or one that makes for a multi faceted floor http://www.originalcolorchips.com/. Follow the manufacturers suggestions for prep, but with a new floor, you can hardly go wrong.

Muriatic acid is great for ';etching'; a floor prior to coating, gives a much stronger bond, less prone to peeling soon after.

With stains, they can be scraped fairly easily and are more for looks, so if you use the floor hard, it could look a little odd later. The optimum is sealing and resealing regularly if the sole concern is keeping absorption to a minimum or none.
    1. Remove all dirt and grease.

    2. Apply a masonry sealer with a roller - allow to dry 24 hours.

    3. Apply Kemiko or similar concrete stain. It's a full pigment opaque stain that has the advantage of not peeling. Regular latex will peel. Epoxies will eventually peel after years of use.
I have given new homeowner orientation classes for one of the largest national builders, and it would be considered more important to seal your concrete prior to painting. Paint does not penetrate the surface, leaving it susceptible to water intrusion, which can obviously be a problem. The best product we found was Trojan Masonry Sealer 866-874-8070 or

www.eco-wares.com. It will not void the warranty, and has been proven to last up to 10 years. If you just paint, you will most likely need to re-do it every 1-2 years, and it will not do anything but make it look pretty. The idea is to protect your investment. Check it out, the more you know, the better decision you will make.

What spray paint holds up best to wear and weather on concrete?

I'm wondering what spray paint will hold up the longest and will look the best doing it. If you have a product review I would love to hear it. Comparisons of products are good too. The medium will mainly be concrete, but could also include wood, plastic, glass, and metal.

One thing I DO NOT want to hear is your opinion on whether or not I should be spray painting, so save it for someone who cares. Thank you. What spray paint holds up best to wear and weather on concrete?
The usual spray paint are for metals. Though they can withstand weather conditions and can stick to anything. If you're planning to paint it outside (question implies you'll be) you really don't have to worry about brands because it will not last for centuries, any will do. As to quality it depends on your taste. Usually these are standardize so they won't make much difference. What spray paint holds up best to wear and weather on concrete?

Sorry I dont know what sort of colours you had in mind and I was going to suggest the type of floor paint they put in commercial garages.....it comes in rustic red and green and I dare say its probably in grey as well, its tough and waterproof so if your creation is to be used outdoors this would wear well.

What is the best paint to use on a concrete floor on a screened porch.?

The best answer for this is a paint that is designed for concrete floors. There are several to choose from from 2 part epoxies, which would be the best choice if your willing to deal with mixing the parts and applying them fast for they tend to set up quickly, to cheap and affordable latex paints. if your concrete floor has never been painted, then i would suggest a cement stain. they make it now in a lot of colors. once you paint a cement floor , you always have to repaint it . buy a good quality paint that is for concrete if you are going to paint it rather than stain it.

  • What can you cover the bottom of a concrete pool with besides paint?

Rocks. I know that sounds weird, I've seen pools with rocks that were like glued together with cement and placed at the bottom of the pool like a floor. They're really smooth and colorful.

You can also put tiles. =]What can you cover the bottom of a concrete pool with besides paint?

What kind of paint do I use for a very small concrete statue?

It's more like a door stopper. I want to use bright colors didn't know if I could use any type of acrylic. It is going to be outside. Please help!!What kind of paint do I use for a very small concrete statue?
Use a wire brush to prepare the surface and wipe off the old brushed paint. Use a concrete stain or concrete paint available anywhere paint is sold. What kind of paint do I use for a very small concrete statue?
possibly some House wall paint would do, i wouldn't use regular acrylic tube because the weather would severely chip it off and make it look like crap. Either Sherwin Williams or Lowe's paint would do. Or the nearest house wall paint store will do.
I agree with the guy above.

But just as a side note: DON'T use acrylic if it's going outside. Even if it's coated with a sealer, my experience has shown that it will get severe weather damage.

What kind of paint to use on concrete blocks (Exterior)?

It sounds like you are talking about cinder blocks.

If they are new you want to let them dry out for about 10 good drying days, this is so the mortar joints dry.

For a good appearance you then want to use a block filler-that's a thick paint especially made to fill in all the pores and pin holes in the block.Block filler is best applied with a thick(1 inch +)roller cover and worked in to make sure all the holes are filled. It can also be sprayed using a very high quality airless sprayer with a large tip-a small airless simply wont push that thick paint.

For a finish coat you have two choices-Regular exterior LATEX house paint, any shine you want or an Elastomaric coating-the house paint being the more cost effective way as Elastomaric is costly-you can roll or spray either, just like the block filler-Be care full spraying or you could wind up trashing cars,etc....

If there is already paint on the block simply scrape it,watch out for any powdery areas-get that off real good.Prime all the bare spots with a good acrylic primer and paint with acrylic(latex) house paint. What kind of paint to use on concrete blocks (Exterior)?
On our external windowsills we have used weathershield smooth exterior masonry paint. Dulux. It still looks good and May hasn't been the sunniest month here in Hampshire UK! (Rain and wind actually)! ):

Removing rubber backing/carpet glue on concrete w/ paint remover. Surface treatment, patching before painting?

I would use an concrete etch to open the pores on the concrete.

if you patch you will need to do this anyway because new concrete will not adhere well to old concrete, some patch mixes have the etch in them some do not.

etch is an acid so make sure you have LOTS !!! of ventilation

BE CAREFUL - harmful fumes that are flammable
