If I remove carpet and paint the concrete how does that look and what should I do for the best effect?

I helped a friend do exactly that and we faux painted it to look like stone. You can make it look like marble, travertine, limestone even slate. It looks more realistic if you use painters tape to make grout lines, though, instead of making it one big slab. Paint does wear off after awhile.. I've been in homes where the owner stained the concrete and it looks beautiful!
