My husband didn't do research and repainted the concrete front steps without stripping the old paint. I now have 3 layers of paint and I'm having a hard time using a stripper - it's taking me hours to do ust a square foot. Is there any other alternative other than a power washer? Is there anything I can do that will allow me to paint over the old paint? How to remove paint and repaint concrete?
If you are using a good paint stripper. It should dissolve the paint (soften it up) so you can scrap it off. You could also use a Miratic Acid solution. This will ';eat away'; at the paint also. Even after you use the stripper I would use a power pressure washer to clean the loose particles off that are between the cracks and uneven portions of the cement. You can rent a power washer you do not have to own or buy one. There are just not a lot of short cuts to getting some difficult jobs done. Well there is one -- hire someone else to do it.How to remove paint and repaint concrete?
When we paint pool decks, we acid etch
with a mix of water %26amp; Muriatic Acid.
Use gloves %26amp; mask. VERY caustic!
A drop of Ivory Liquid in the acid, water bucket will reduce the fumes.
After, to neutralize the acid, use TSP (tri sodium phophate).
Cascade dishwasher detergent is used in place of TSP, for
using what you may already have in your home.
We use behr concrete stain. Works great.
really need to remove all those layers since there are so many.....u could rent a sand blaster ( this would be your best bet)....could try a power washer but I don't think it will get every thing off and will be slow....hard to say without seeing it....u can use a scraper or elec wire brush to remove the loose paint....u need to feather the edges of the old paint that u can't remove and repaint....but with low and high spots in the paint its not going to look that good.....u need to get right down to the concrete so the paint will stick better
My idea would be to hire a sandblaster. That will rip through the paint in no time and you get a nice clean finish.
Best of luck.
